I was born in Taipei and moved to Dallas, Texas when I was 6 years old. At first it was hard, not knowing a word of English! But I studied hard and soon spoke English fluently, eventually graduating from high school in the top of the class. It was during high school that I started taking voice lessons and discovered that I love singing and performing on stage! I especially enjoyed musical theater and I overcame my shyness because of singing.
After high school, I attended Stanford University in California for college. In college, I decided that I wanted to be a doctor, but I always dreamed of becoming a professional singer. I continued to take voice lessons, and take chemistry, biology, and other pre-med courses. I also performed in five musicals during college, as well as many voice recitals. Music helped to relieve the stress of studying to be a doctor!
After graduating from Stanford, I attended medical school in Houston, Texas. As a medical student, I studied the most I ever had in my entire life! It was like learning a new language of medicine. Even with all the studying, I found some time to sing with my medical school choir and perform at the annual talent show.
In the US, you graduate from medical school with a MD degree. But before you can open your own clinic, you have to specialize in one area of medicine by going to medical residency. So I did my residency in family medicine in California. I especially enjoy the relationships I develope with my patients. I will never forget the little baby boy I delivered and his nice parents, and the elderly Chinese couple I took care of in my clinic for 3 years. But residency is hard, particularly when you have to stay overnight at the hospital to be "on call" and working for 30 hours with little sleep! I have now completed my residency and in the process of setting up my own clinic.
In addition, my dream of being a singer is coming true in Taiwan! I have returned to Taiwan to record songs and make music videos while setting up my medical practice in the US. Sometimes I feel like I am living two separate lives! But at the same time, I feel that being a doctor and being a singer can both help people. Singing helps me to relieve stress and feel peaceful. And I hope that my singing can bring that same feeling to others who hear my voice. Music is a form of healing one's spirit and soul, just as medicine can heal one's physical body. So you see, being a singer and a doctor to me has the same goal of helping others feel happy and healthy.
